What is Fibromyalgia??

Treatment from a pain management expert is often sought for the condition known as Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FS).  This health condition affects 3 to 6 million Americans.  Many people are unfamiliar with this condition because much of FS is still a mystery and there is no clear test to diagnose this syndrome.
A patient with FS usually starts with body aches and pains at different pressure points on the body including but not limited to the elbow, hips and knees, front and back of the neck.  Usually it starts in one area and spreads over time to the rest.  Patients describe the pain as radiating, burning or aching.   Initially they may think they have the flu.
Other FS symptoms include fatigue, morning stiffness, depression, tension and migraine headaches, sleep disturbance, abdominal pain, decreased energy, decreased endurance during exercise.
Many patients are treated for other diseases before they are diagnosed with FS.  The best way for a physician to diagnose this disease is by ruling out other health problems such as hypothyroidism.
Treatment varies depending on the needs of the patient.   Prescription and over the counter medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen are helpful in relieving mild pain.  Relaxation techniques and exercise focusing on stretching and cardiovascular fitness is helpful.
FS patients experiencing moderate to severe pain that disrupts daily living activities and sleep are often referred to a pain management specialist.   After confirming the diagnosis, the following course of treatment is suggested. Use of antidepressants, and trigger point injections.  Physical or Occupational Therapy exercises using spray and stretching exercises of the affected muscles.
